Do you remember those years in kindergarten and grade school when your teacher asks everyone in the class the question:
“what do you want to be when you grow up?”
And a lot of kids would raise their hands and shout out:
“ A doctor! “
Well, I was one of those kids who wished to be in a lab coat with stethoscopes hanging by their neck and telling sick people that they were going to be all right. But growing up and seeing a lot of new things, learning a lot more about the world, my dream life wavered from being a doctor, to an environmentalist, an astronaut (maybe from watching too much sci-fi flicks in the 90’s!), an engineer/architect (I still remember the blue prints from papa’s stash), a Saint (yes!!! a Saint), and a lot more I can’t remember right now.
High school came and I was closer to making that decision. Who do I want to be in 10 years? A medical doctor(once more). I wanted to be in the noble profession of healing people.
College came and I took-up Chemistry, which is considered a pre-med course. I took the qualifying test for prospective med students. But I never actually enrolled or even applied to any med school. Oooops, what happened?
During those years after college, I was constantly giving my self excuses not to. I just realized this in a recent conversation with my mom. Everyone in the family was excited for me to get into med school, except for my self. I wanted to do other things, to see the world and help change what must be changed. And the scientist in me, wanted to explore and decipher more (in the DEEP SEAS and the forests).
So, right now, I’m taking up Marine Science and keeping my fingers (and brain) crossed that I will be lucky enough (ha!) to discover something useful in the world of OCEANOGRAPHY!!!
